Thoughts on quilting

I saw a beautiful painting entitled "The Quilting Bee" by Morgan Weistling. It shows several women with needles in hand gathered around a quilt while children are playing under the quilt. It made me think that quilting has gone from a community event to an almost solitary event in many ways. Women used to gather together around a quilt and spend that time bonding/gossiping/growing together. Now we (or at least I) sit alone in a sewing room piecing the quilt together and then send it off to someone with a long-arm machine who (alone) quilts it. It kind of makes me sad. The end project is still beautiful and useful and I still derive joy from the creation of it, but I wonder what I've missed out on in my solitary endeavor.
